About Venus Fly Trap
The Venus Flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to North and South Carolina. They typically grow in swampy regions which are low in nitrogen (and essential nutrient for plant growth) and evolved carnivory as a clever solution. Their traps are triggered by small hairs and the closing of their traps is one of the fastest momevents among all plants! Their traps often die off after trapping and digesting prey, so be careful not to trigger them — leave those traps for the bugs 🐜!
Taxonomy
Dionaea muscipula
Dionaea
Droseraceae
Caryophyllales
Also known as
Red Piranha and Meadow Clams

Finding light for Venus Fly Trap in your home
Venus Fly Trap love being close to bright, sunny windows 😎.
Place it less than 1ft from a south-facing window to maximize the potential for growth.
Venus Fly Trap does not tolerate low-light 🚫.
Select your region to see how the current weather in your area affects the placement of Venus Fly Trap in your home 🏡.
How to fertilize Venus Fly Trap
Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Venus Fly Trap after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Should I be worried about my Venus fly trap? My Venus fly trap has lost several leaves in the past month. I’ve snipped them off carefully with scissors. I haven’t changed how I care for it. Is this normal for VFTs or should I be concerned?
-
Dang, homie picked those exoskeletons clean 🫨 do I take them out or…? #VenusFlyTrap

My concern grows for this little baby trap as it slowly grows more and more into the mouth of a bigger trap 😅 #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #CarnivorousPlants #CarnivorousClub #VenusFlyTrap

#cpclubthursday Flower Power ! So I’m the first to admit these photos are too late for #cpclubthursday ;which remarkably just gained it’s 200th member) and #FreshLeafFriday #FreshFeaturedFriday however I wanted to show how this Venus Fly Trap starts out as a single “flower” and then produces about 6 new flowers as it grows! I realize many of my Northern Hemisphere VFT fans are starting to see the signs of dormancy (see dormancy from last Thursday’s #cpclubthursday post) so I thought I’d share this VFT coming out of dormancy as we head into a warm spring here on the other side of the world. The flowers will be well above the “prey catching” traps of the rest of the plant (which are increasingly looking hungry 😋 ) With 200 members, maybe it’s time to celebrate this coming Thursday as we move into October ! 😀🥰👍🙏 #HappyPlants (I see there is now over 1000 happy plant members too !!!) #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #PropagationStation #OrchidLovers #GrowLights #CarnivorousPlants #CarnivorousClub #VFT #VenusFlyTrap #GregGang #theamigos #Seymour

#cpthursday ft. My #VFT who was accidentally given a large dose of tap water by an unknowing family member. He’s doing a bit better! Even attempting to produce a flower. Hoping that he will continue to recover well and produce more healthy traps, as the ones he had been producing before the incident passed away sadly:/

Happy #cpclubthursday! My #VenusFlyTrap caught another fly! I’m excited on how many bugs my VFTs have been catching lately! 🪰🕷️ She’s definitely enjoying her sunny window and loves to catch flies. ☀️🪟 #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #CarnivorousPlants #PlantCorner #PestControl #PlantShelfie

Care Summary for Venus Fly Trap

What other plant parents say
Venus fly traps like to stay moist but not water logged. They love the bright light, south facing is best but mine is doing fine in my east facing window. Not allowing them to dry out is best as they prefer soil that is slight moist. These plants are incredible and look amazing
I love my carnivorous plants, but this one is one of my neediest plants. It needs constant moisture and constant water.
It also needs to eat. But if whatever you feed it doesn’t fit in it’s little mouths, it will cause the head to die. Make sure when they are small you only give them house flys and make sure the mouth is closed completely around it. 😊
