Finding light for Kenyan Violet in your home

a window
Kenyan Violet may have difficulty thriving, and will drop leaves 🍃, without ample sunlight.
Place it less than 3 feet from a south-facing window to maximize the potential for growth.

How to fertilize Kenyan Violet

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Kenyan Violet after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

How do I get my African violet to flower. It’s close to an east facing window.

Sad drooping leaves #KenyanViolet I got these at the same time from same place. They were in dense soil so I repotted both about 4 days ago in well aerated soil with coco coir, perlite and small orchid bark. One is doing great and the other is sad. When repotting, the root ball was very compact and roots very fine and a little brown but very hard to get the old soil off without getting rid of a lot of roots. Not sure what to do with her? Should I snip the blooms so she’s can focus on leaves? Or should I still worry about the roots? TIA!

Help with my African Violet :( Hi, I inherited this African Violet from my grandmother when she passed away in December. It has not been doing well, all the leaves except two are turning brown and limp. I have been watering from above twice a week and I repotted it when I first got it because the plant was unhappy then too, leaves were soggy and rotten. When I got it I removed the dead leaves, repotted in Miracle Gro potting mix, and put it in my bathroom under a grow light. I noticed it wasn’t growing at all under the grow light so I moved it to the sill of a south facing window. Since I moved it, it has gotten even worse. I moved it out of the direct sunlight but don’t know what to do. This plant is really important to me, please please help.

What other plant parents say

Love my violet. So easy to take care of and the intermittent blooms are gorgeous. The violet prefers north-facing windows, water from the bottom, and I add in a little violet fertilizer that I got off Amazon with each water. The plant LOVES IT! The bloom cycles are so beautiful and it requires very little maintenance to keep it happy.

The greenhouse I bought it from has a ton with lovely blooms. Do not be fooled, this is a picky little plant! Apparently it "blooms when it's happy" which must mean mine is fuckin miserable. It will brown if you get water on its leaves so I'm pipetting it with water. I hope it will perk up when the weather gets warmer.
