How to fertilize Heart of Jesus

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Heart of Jesus after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Watering completed early thanks to this crazy thunderstorm in the DFW area. I have 2 Hearts of Jesus outside, Peter and Paul, and they were due to be watered tomorrow. So were my deadhead tulips and the one potted petunia I saved. Guess those plant chores are taken care of! #weather #thunderstorms #wateringschedule #plantchores

How do I make them stand up? There’s a new new shoot coming up and most are still standing up straight but a few on the outside are laying down almost all the way. Should I cut them or are they healthy? Do they just need more support?

I thought I unalived it last year. I found the corms in my old dirt pile rooting.

Should this be an indoor only plant? #GregPlantShop

Experimenting is so scary!!!! I knew he was root bound so I thought I would sell a couple of bulbs and upgrade him to a bigger pot before the roots started to deteriorate. Roots are super big and healthy. 🤦🏼♀️so stressed lol. As you can see I got one out and part of the bulb was a tiny bit mushy. I just cut the part off with clean scissors and sprayed the cut with 3% hydrogen peroxide. I’m going to let that one dry out for about 7hours then put just the roots in water. I’m so scared I damaged the one I separated. Everything else was wound so tightly together I didn’t want to take anything else off. I lost three beautiful baby leaves and the big plant is already drooping. I’m so scared and I know this is part off the game and part of learning but I don’t like to fail and I’m supposed to give this bulb to a nice lady in about a week. Any words of encouragementouragement or recommendations would be so so welcome lol.

Back leaves wilting…. My caladium is doing amazing! But the back leaves are not doing great. They feel like they are wilting and are curling on the edges. The top is growing to the grow light should i turn it and let the back get some light…. I’m not sure. #Caladium

Sos 💔 This is one of the leaves of my beautiful caladium. It is a small plant, hasnt had a proper chance to grow as it keeps dealing with THIS. What the hell is going on? I thought i was underwatering, but i bottomed watered it few days ago and just yesterday i had to take the soil out and squeeze out the water cause IT WAS STILL WET. So what the hell is up? The soil was moist. Clearly, a lot if it let out water when squeezed. I did crumple the leaf before i took a picture cause I wanted to throw it out but oh well - this like, withering, begins at the edges of a leaf and slowly consumes the leaf whole. What can i do? #caladium #help

SOS #Caladium I've had my caladium for like a week or more, and since then it hasn't been doing well :( I did overwater it on the first day I got it and panicked, so I took it out, took the soggy soil out, dried it a bit and mixed it with dry soil. That was some time ago, at first I thought it could be stressed, but it kinda just stayed dying like that. Two leaves died completely.. I repotted it just yesterday and checked the roots, so I know for sure it's not rotting. Is it possible I'm underwatering it now or something?

Caladium is sad I just got this caladium like maybe a week ago. It looked good, happy, healthy. Its leaves were very fragile though. I came back to look at it today and give it some water but one leaf turned completely brown, and the other one is decaying in between the veins. Please help, I dont know what I did :( #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #help #GrowLights #NewPlantMom #Caladium

Care Summary for Heart of Jesus

Greg recommends:

0.5 cups every 9 days

< 3ft from a window

Repot after 2x growth
Based on the 4” pot your plant is in, and that it doesn’t get direct sunlight.

What other plant parents say

The leaves do die fairly quickly compared to many plants but they come back super fast. Since they grow from a bulb as long as you have lights and proper temperatures you can grow them easily indoors over winter. I add a layer of spagnum moss (about an inch deep) on top of my soil to keep humidity higher and moisture in for longer and she thrives.

Caladiums are beautiful but difficult. They’re supposed to go dormant over the winter so I try not to take it too personally but any kind of chill, like a window open or the air conditioner on near it can kill off a few leaves fairly quickly.
The stunning leaves are worth it though.

This place did not like the dry air in my kitchen so I moved it to the porch where it’s a bit more humid and it is thriving I have since gotten 6 new growths since moving it. With the proper care this plant can produce beautiful leaves, and when one dies off another will grow in its place, love it!
