About Beefsteak Begonia
There are over 2,000 species of Begonia, and horticulturalists have created even more varities by cultivating all sorts of shapes and colors! They're native to tropical regions around the world, but are now found in homes in cold climates as well. Their taxonomy is far more complex than other plants, with species belonging to different cultivar groups. They contain oxalic acid, so be sure to keep them out of reach in homes with pets or children! ⚠️
Taxonomy
Begonia hydrocotylifolia x manicata
Begonia
Begoniaceae
Cucurbitales
Also known as
begonia 'black jungle' and begonia black jungle

Finding light for Beefsteak Begonia in your home

a window
Beefsteak Begonia may have difficulty thriving, and will drop leaves 🍃, without ample sunlight.
Place it less than 3 feet from a south-facing window to maximize the potential for growth.
Select your region to see how the current weather in your area affects the placement of Beefsteak Begonia in your home 🏡.
How to fertilize Beefsteak Begonia

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Beefsteak Begonia after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Leggy leggy leggy I received a beautiful beefsteak begonia from my aunt. She’s had it for many decades. When I received it, it was SUPER leggy, the rhizomes were pouring out and over the pot. I’ve attempted to repot (normally I don’t in the fall but it was dropping quick), and staked her up until acclimation happens. Just wondering if anyone here has any tips and tricks. (It’s a lot of pressure acquiring plants that someone’s had their entire adult life, and entrusted them to me)

Plant ID help Clubed Begonia is what the app suggested, but it isnt quite right. Any ideas? Also she was just transposed from propagation water to a pot, so she looks droopy and sad. Advice is welcomed too.

Hi, folks. I repotted my beefsteak begonia from a 4" nursery pot into an 8" diameter bulb pan. Greg is now recommending 1.5 cups, which seems like too much. Is it based on a conventional depth pot? How do I get Greg to check/revise that? #Begonia

Rhizomes begonia propagation Hello y’all! I’m looking for tips to propagate by leaf on this begonia. I’ve tested on a few of mines and despite using alcohol on my container and on my tools, I keep getting mold 😔 I need some tried and true methods. I watched so many videos but nothing has been working when it comes to prop boxes for me. (Even with regular philodendron/pothos) Help me, I wanna share this beauty with people I know and I would like to not use all its leaves to do so. I will take rhizome propagation tips too, I have another one that is in dire need of a cut as it is crawling out of the pot. TIA ❤️ #help #Propagation #Begonia #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PropBox #TipsandTricks
