#sciencewithgreg #avocadoexperiment🥑 update!! "HAASta-la-vista" (Exp. 01) is still doing fantastic! He has three new leaves and is working on a fourth. He's well over due for a pot and a haircut, but I'm not emotionally ready yet... Him and his #goldenpothos buddy are still getting ≈50/50 filtered water + #mycorrhizalfungi concentrate and a splash of #foxfarmgrowbig fertilizer. Either 25% or 50% strength, depending what's on hand at the moment. (Usually 25.) "Waterboy" (Exp. 02) has actually pulled ahead of the yet unnamed Exp. 03 in the sprout game and got upgraded to his big boy jar today! He has been receiving nothing but plain filtered water and once his wee baby tree sprout gets a few inches tall I'll start introducing fertilizer... Exp. 03 and his pothos buddy also got their big boy jar today as his tap root was officially touching the bottom of the lil cup he used to be in. He has yet to fully sprout, tho if you look real close (pics in comments) you can see there is actually a sprout in their, it's just being shy right now... He also only gets plain filtered water at the moment. "Eggy" (Exp. 04) has yet to show any signs of life, but I did recently give him a bunch of pothos friends to help him out. He's getting ≈50/50 filtered + #pothoswater to help his pals root and once they do I'll switch him back to just plain water. (He earned his name because he currently reminds me of the egg in vinegar experiment we did in school. Lol) "Thomas" (Exp. 05) got some cinnamon treatment today as his top soil had started growing some white mold. Otherwise he looks fine. I forgot to take his goblet hat off for a few days, so it was likely my fault he has this uninvited guest living with him now... When he needs it, he gets ≈50/50 pothos water + filtered. I started this guy a few days AFTER the one in plain filtered water and look it! It's starting to root!! Well, finally seeing *something* happen over here... 17 days ago I expanded my #avocado experiment for #sciencewithgreg and these two are starting to crack! Finally! Original experiment done with a pit that had already sprouted inside the avocado. Placed it in ≈50/50 #mycorrhizalfungi and water + 25% strength liquid fertilizer with a pothos cutting and it's been growing pretty good! Again, I really can't say if the pothos has done much but that's why I started the other two. One is just in plain (filtered) water and the other is in plain water w/ a pothos clipping. Hopefully we'll start seeing roots soon and I can find out if it was the #mycorrhizae or #pothos that did the magic or maybe the combo of the two is best. We'll see. #avocadoexperiment update! 🥑 Today my still unnamed #pothos baby (Exp. 03) and WaterBoy (Exp. 02) started getting a tiny taste of #foxfarmgrowbig fertilizer (50% strength). Just a Tbsp (maybe even less) in the jar, so pretty weak still... WaterBoy has left 03 in the dust in terms of growth! Not only is he about 4" tall compared to 03's roughly half inch, he's also starting to get secondary roots! Eggy (Exp. 04) has finally started showing signs of life with a tiny crack at the bottom... Fully submerging them in water instead of using the toothpick method is supposed to make them crack evenly all around, but that seems like it might have been false information. We'll see. Lol Him and his #goldenpothos buddies are still just getting plain filtered water for now... Thomas (Exp. 05) is also showing signs of life! He actually started his tap root about a week after I put him in soil I just kept forgetting to post. 😅 So far it seems the straight to soil method is where it's at in terms of speed! He's covered in cinnamon because he's been really struggling with white mold even tho I take his goblet greenhouse off for a few hours a day. Might just leave it off for good from now on... (MiracleGro is hella cheap but y'all I'm very quickly getting sick and tired of it. Everything I've potted from my most recent bag has struggled with mold and has wicked fungus gnats...)
