Thought I'd share the unique setup I had designed for one of my pings, Athena. I wanted to try something other than rocks, and she wasn't doing well in the mix I initially had her in, so I made her a moss tower out of a (humanely sourced) deer vertebra. Took a while to sterilize it, but the idea was to run the moss through the places where spinal fluid and blood circulate, so that when stood in water (like the lava rock method) it circulates through the top, to the roots, and the excess funnels back down. The shape lends itself well to that water movement, and until everything is thoroughly attached/rooted, it's being held with silk threads. She looks like shes doing better in this situation, I think it also helps with root aeration. If it works as well as I theorize, then I'll make more. Thought I'd share the unique setup I had designed for one of my pings, Athena. I wanted to try something other than rocks, and she wasn't doing well in the mix I initially had her in, so I made her a moss tower out of a (humanely sourced) deer vertebra. Took a while to sterilize it, but the idea was to run the moss through the places where spinal fluid and blood circulate, so that when stood in water (like the lava rock method) it circulates through the top, to the roots, and the excess funnels back down. The shape lends itself well to that water movement, and until everything is thoroughly attached/rooted, it's being held with silk threads. She looks like shes doing better in this situation, I think it also helps with root aeration. If it works as well as I theorize, then I'll make more.
