👩‍🔬 Last up in our #WomenInSTEM series is Rachel Carson! 🌳 Famed for her groundbreaking novel, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s writing sprung the beginning of the environmental movement in the US. 🐟 She started out as a writer and researcher for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and her journey eventually brought her to learn about DDT, a pesticide. 🦟 DDT became popular in the 1940’s as an incredibly effective insecticide that helped protect troops from mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria. 🦅 What we didn’t know at the time was how the chemical would impact us and our ecosystems. For example, bird populations plummeted in the 40’s because of widespread DDT use. The chemical made their eggshells much thinner, which left the babies unprotected. 🌍 Silent Spring captured the attention of America and caused a complete whirlwind of change. ♻️ Thanks to the movements sparked by her work, we now have the Environmental Protection Agency which is responsible for “protecting human health and the environment” and an incredible worldwide web of folks dedicated to protecting our ecosystems. 💪 We’re so #grateful for the work of Rachel Carson and the countless other butt-kickin’ ladies in science who paved the way for #WomenInSTEM 💞 And a very special #THANKYOU to all the ladies of Greg who share their wisdom and kindness in our community every day. 📖 Grab a copy of Silent Spring here: https:// #GregTeam #Spring
