👩‍🔬 Welcome to another edition of #WomenInSTEM 🌾 Today we’re celebrating Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer, member of the indigenous Citizen Potowatami Nation and professor of ecology at SUNY ESF. She’s also the author of the critically acclaimed book, Braiding Sweetgrass. 🌏 Dr. Kimmerer’s teachings and writings weave traditional ecological knowledge with our scientific understandings to create a beautiful new way to view the world. 🌳 Her work teaches us how to celebrate the kinship between humans, nature, and all Earth’s plants and creatures, which are honored as gifts to us all! 💕 Her native language of Anishinaabe lacks an equivalent word for “it”, and Dr. Kimmerer suggests a new pronoun for referring to nature and its gifts: Ki/Kin. 🪴 With Dr. Kimmerer’s wisdom in mind, try it out with your plants today! 👩‍🔬 Last up in our #WomenInSTEM series is Rachel Carson! 🌳 Famed for her groundbreaking novel, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s writing sprung the beginning of the environmental movement in the US. 🐟 She started out as a writer and researcher for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and her journey eventually brought her to learn about DDT, a pesticide. 🦟 DDT became popular in the 1940’s as an incredibly effective insecticide that helped protect troops from mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria. 🦅 What we didn’t know at the time was how the chemical would impact us and our ecosystems. For example, bird populations plummeted in the 40’s because of widespread DDT use. The chemical made their eggshells much thinner, which left the babies unprotected. 🌍 Silent Spring captured the attention of America and caused a complete whirlwind of change. ♻️ Thanks to the movements sparked by her work, we now have the Environmental Protection Agency which is responsible for “protecting human health and the environment” and an incredible worldwide web of folks dedicated to protecting our ecosystems. 💪 We’re so #grateful for the work of Rachel Carson and the countless other butt-kickin’ ladies in science who paved the way for #WomenInSTEM 💞 And a very special #THANKYOU to all the ladies of Greg who share their wisdom and kindness in our community every day. 📖 Grab a copy of Silent Spring here: https:// #GregTeam #Spring

Never thought that I would go full on gardening and see my backyard filled with garden beds within a single growing season. I’ve always thought that I would gradually do it. The pandemic really pushed us to focus on the garden this year, which kept us really busy and for some moments forget what’s happening in the world. The garden was a bright light through all this. Feeling grateful for this vegetable harvest! #grateful #gardeningistheraphy #gardeningisfun #gardenlove #eatwhatyougrow #harvest #gardenlife #urbangardener #plantedinthegarden

Spent the weekend up at Big Branch Marsh NWR in the #longleafpine savanna! This type of ecosystem is super endangered and completely dependent on fires to stay healthy🔥 Very #grateful for the chance to see them while they’re still around! #louisiana
