Cheers to #freshleaffriday everyone! I have a personal fresh leaf to share today: last night I submitted my application to the Master Gardener Volunteer program at one of our universities here in Maine. Update on my $7 big box stores bulbs that I planted about 6 weeks ago. One has three plants and they are all perfect. Cool plant alert! 🚨🌱👻 My neighbor text the other day that we had these growing along the road and I spotted a bunch on the path behind my house this morning. This is a Ghost Pipe, scientific name Monotropa Uniflora. It's native to Asia, North America and South America. It is a parasitic plant because of the lack of chlorophyll. Apparently it's really rare because it grows in very specific conditions. For the last month or more we have had about 9 days of rain and one day of sun in every 10 day forecast. It's been miserable for everyone. 🌦️ I've been slacking on my plant chores because between the high humidity and no sun I am snoozing constantly. Knock on wood I still have new growth (thank you grow lights) and no one seems to be in poor health. Today I told myself instead of glancing at my plants to look for drooping, I'd check all their soil and snooze everyone that needed it. I went from about 149 needing water to 64 after snoozing, and now only 13. 🌿 This also led to family bath time and I actually sat down and used leaf cleaner to ensure pests stay away. I got about 20 of my most pest prone, dust prone plants cleaned up. 🛁 Feeling like a responsible plant parent today 🙂. It was quite necessary since we are potty training my youngest and my husband is back to work tomorrow so my plants will get zero attention for a while. A fun #freshleaffriday post! First up, my #calatheafreddie is in bloom! I repot it three weeks ago so I have no idea how this happened 🤦🏽 the blooms are short lived, you can see the old and new ones in the close up photo. But the SCENT! It is incredible and so strong! 😍 I moved my #goldenpothos outside for the summer. I've been carefully turning it so it doesn't get sunburned and becomes fuller evenly. But, it seems some birds had other plans. So Pat, my 30+ year old golden is growing in a different way and 🤞🏼 he comes out stronger! I had one of those "duh" a-ha moments today. I always used to complain that people had these huge elephant ears in planters and they are going to go to waste in the winter. I also complain that I can't find the right plant for each side of our front door without buying huge, expensive, floor plants that I then had to find space for in the winter. Queue the a-ha. Buy elephant ear bulbs on sale for $7 each, plant in the spring, cut back and dig up in the fall, repeat. Happy #freshleaffriday to 3/5 of my #alocasia that are working on new leaves right now! Finally 😒 My ninja had a fit when I got it and between that and winter both plants in the pot have had just one leaf for SO long. The dragon scale has also had a hard time adjusting. I got it before the ninja but it has only put out one new leaf since. Ran to HomeGoods, TJ Maxx and Michaels to get some new pots. I'll likely go back for a few more but with Memorial Day sales I wanted to let you all know what I found: HomeGoods: mostly big pots and floor stands, lots of white, some yellows, few other colors. TJMaxx: more sizes, but still on the larger size, lots of white, some terracotta, some bold colors, lots of plant stands/risers.
