#cpclubthursday CP CLUB THURSDAY for October 31 2024 Halloween 🎃 👻 “Because if it’s Thursday, it’s Carnivorous Plants Club! “ BONUS POST Welcome to #cpclubthursday 🌟NOW OVER 220 MEMBERS !🌟 FOCUS: RECENT NEPENTHES SALE (Australia Only) Almost forgot! Last Saturday there was a major sale of Nepenthes from a main Australian supplier (Carnivaro - similar name to a US supplier Carnivero!) So popular is it that it had a countdown to the sale commencing and no wonder when you see the Nepenthes for sale. Some highlights: a Nepenthes Edwardsiana for AUD $749 (that’s over US $492 or £380 or 454 Euro!!!) The next most expensive was a bargain at AUD $438 for a Nepenthes Hamata. I’ll add all the photos I took in the comments below 👇 so if you wonder what Nepenthes can look like, this gives you an idea. And so were less than AUD $30 so there a Nepenthes for everyone! And being tropical, as a posted before, dormancy isn’t so much an issue as with many other CPs. So here’s a great way to look at growing CPs that seems to be a great way as with most hydroponics, you need to add nutrients to the water but with CPs they prefer a nutrient free medium to grow in (hence eg peat moss/perlite or pure sphagnum moss!) This guy is a great resource for anyone growing Nepenthes indoors (hence the Windowsill Nepenthes) and Remy is based in Canada (from France hence French accent!). So I have been watching his LetPot hydroponic videos and he just released his latest update. Here’s the video and it’s fairly short (6.5 minutes): https:// It’s similar to other brands like Aerogarden (did they go out of business recently !?!) in using plugs into a water reservoir and grow lights. Anyway share if you have tried this hydroponic system for your own CPs or similar or planning to give it a go! As we move into dormancy for many members, it is an important reminder of why Nepenthes are such a different CP to VFTs, sundews and butterworts (pings). Nepenthes are tropical plants so don’t need a dormancy period like their bog plant CP cousins. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t affected by a change of seasons. My sarracenia has just opened a huge pitcher! It’s the biggest one the plant has produced so far. She has also been doing a good job of ridding the house of a fraction of Japanese Beatles, despite being 4 rooms away and inside of a greenhouse. 🪴🐞 I’m very proud of all the growth she’s had since I got her 3 - 4 months back. 🌱 The first picture is when I had just gotten her and the second is her now! 🌱🪴 @Merranda I think you’d appreciate a post on sarracenias. #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #GrowLights #cpclubthursday #CarnivorousPlants #CarnivorousClub #Sarracenia

I find more and more new growth every day despite fall approaching.. Well, I guess technically it has approached. Just not here, haha. I'm especially loving my Sarracenia Rubra spp. Gulfensis! In my last post there was photos of the pitchers that has just opened. Now, they're developing some beautiful colors and still continuously producing more pitchers! It might be one of my favorite Sarracenia. When I was moving my plants back after Hurricane Helene, unfortunately I did notice mealybugs on my Sarracenia Purpurea. I had my suspicions.. and sadly they were true. I do know how to get rid of them, it's really just a matter of if I want to fight them. As of right now, I'm just gonna treat it with what I've got but I dont feel like really fighting them. I hate mealybugs so much ... I'd rather not risk them spreading to the rest of my collection, and the chances of that increase the longer I try and fight them 😬. Mealybugs make me want to burn the plant, am I the only one?? I lost a ton of my non-carnivorous plants to mealies just earlier this year 😒. None of my other plants seem to have mealybugs luckily, I am still treating them though just as a precaution ! 🙂 Took there photos before I moved my plants.. once again.. for a hurricane. Feels like I just did this. My thoughts and prayers are going out to those in and around the Tampa area. Stay safe everyone 🫶. Happy Thursday everyone!! There's lots of new growth happening here. Unfortunately, it was difficult to get good photos as my plants are currently all moved to a safer location because of the incoming hurricane helene, and its dark where they were moved. I figured it was better to be safe than sorry :) but, I wanted to share nonetheless. My Sarracenia Rubra ssp Gulfensis is suddenly putting out huge pitchers compared to the ones from earlier in the season! Not quiet sure what prompted it, but I'm definitely not complaining!! They just opened today, so they don't have much color yet and are a little deformed at the moment. Within a few days they'll be stunning though 😁 I also took photos of an unknown ID sarrracenia that I've got. I believe it's some sort of hybrid with S. Minor in it. S. Minor isn't usually that red, so that's why I believe it's a hybrid. This plant was damaged when I received it a couple of months ago, and I honestly had doubts that it would survive. After not much happening for 2 months, Phoenix has finally produced a pitcher and it’s a real beauty!!! Been super busy lately, so this post is a bit late for #freshleaffriday or #cpclubthursday 😅 Luckily, we have been getting lots of rain so my outdoor plants are especially happy right now! I was checking on them this morning and my Sarracenia "Tygo" caught my eye -- I didn't even notice just how many pitchers it's gotten! Compared to last year, it's also gotten noticeably bigger. I love bring able to see my plants basically grow up & get bigger after each dormancy. My 3 rescue vfts from Home Depot are finally beginning to show some color! These guys looked like they were on deaths door when I got them earlier this year. It's taken quite a few months to get them here, and I'm so proud of them 🥹. On the topic of vfts, my baby vfts are adorable!! I love them so much. I'm beginning to also see more late season pitchers on my Sarracenia! CP CLUB THURSDAY for September 5th, 2024 Welcome to #cpclubthursday 🌟NOW 180 MEMBERS !🌟 SPECIAL FEATURE: The 3 Sundew Sisters: Tropical Sundews - the Drosera adelae, D. prolifera, and D. schizandra. #3sundewsisters I have extracted the following information on these 3 sundew sisters: Originating from tropical Australian Queensland, Drosera adelae, D. prolifera and D. schizandra, three closely related species, are considered as the 3 Sisters. These species are endemic to far north Queensland. They are unique to the genus in that they are found growing exclusively in rainforest habitat. Peter D'Amato has referred to Drosera adelae, D. prolifera, and D. schizandra as the three sisters from Queensland. The leaves of mature plants are about as different looking as any sisters could be but they are more closely related to each other than they are to any other Drosera. And like any three sisters, each has different growing preferences. But they are united in that juvenile plants do have similar leaves and the flowers are similar as well. The tropical Drosera adelae, D. prolifera, and D. schizandra are about as close as you can get to jungle sundews. There are other Drosera that live in tropical regions and overlap the range of these species such as Drosera burmannii, D. indica, D. banksii, and D. spatulata, but they are not restricted to the wet tropical habitats and are definitely not jungle or rainforest plants. Well, actually, there is now a new sister! Recently a fourth "sister" was discovered and it was named Drosera buubugujin.
