🌿 Ecosystem — Day 15 5 days ago, I kickstarted the nitrogen cycle. Since then, the process has followed a textbook progression — ammonia appeared first, followed by nitrite, and now nitrate, confirming active nitrification. A mild algae bloom has emerged, prompting me to slightly reduce the photoperiod to restore balance. The plants are stabilizing, with some melt still visible but new submerged growth starting to appear. Added hydrocotyle verticillata to my Walstad ecosystem yesterday. The plant’s name comes from Greek—“hydro” (water) and “kotyle” (small cup or shield). Its round, shield-like leaves aren’t just pretty—they actually serve as tiny living umbrellas in wetlands, shading the moist soil beneath them and creating micro-habitats for insects, snails, and fry.
